ABSTRACT
Activated carbons are being frequently used as an adsorbent for heavy metal removal. In the present study, active carbon materials were prepared using rice husk and sugarcane precursor by applying physicalchemical activation methods. To examine the sequestering of heavy metals (cadmium, copper, chromium, nickel, zinc and lead) in a refinery waste batch adsorption technique was adopted and the process parameter was investigated at different temperatures 500, 550 and 600°C and impregnation ratio (1.0, 1.5 and 2.0). SEM was used to determine the surface morphology and functional group while XRD for the crystallographic property. Both rice husk and bagasse showed promising capacity for multiple adsorptions of heavy metals. Freundlich and Langmuir’s models were applied to study the sorption behaviour. Langmuir recorded R2 value of 0.9512 for chromium metal by rice husk activated carbon that was a very good fitting among other metals value and R2 equals 0.957 indicated a very good sorption performance for lead metal by bagasse activated carbon.
